Operating Requirements

Applies To Version(s): 3.5 & 3.7 - Contact your ShareVision Product Expert to upgrade.

Overview

ShareVision will work on any computer connected to the internet that meets minimum system and browser requirements. However, it works most fully on PC computers using a Windows operating system, Microsoft Office Professional software, the Internet Explorer browser, and a few browser support applications.

Some advanced functionality may be lost with non-ideal configurations. In certain circumstances there are workarounds that provide similar functionality (e.g., editing of Office documents by downloading/uploading). Without Microsoft Office Professional installed, Office documents do not open in their native applications, the ability to edit in datasheet mode is lost, and Windows Explorer view is not available. These last two, plus the ability for Office to open/edit/save directly to libraries on the site are only available when using Internet Explorer.

The ShareVision Foundation is based on Microsoft SharePoint technology. As such, ShareVision and SharePoint have similar operating requirements. Below are some guidelines and tips to consider during your set up.

As noted above it is recommended to use the Professional version of Office suites, when available. Home and other “lite” versions may not include all the components necessary for full functionality. Your IT specialist should be able to advise you on these and other specifications, and how to apply the suggestions that follow. Additional resources to address specific issues can be found by searching Microsoft.com or by a general Internet search.

Browsers

As indicated above, Internet Explorer is the most full-featured method for working with ShareVision/Sharepoint sites. Basic functionality (as is required by most frontline personnel) can also be achieved using the Chrome (Windows & Mac) and Edge (Windows 10) browsers. Mac users may also use Safari but there may be some additional limitations when working with this browser.

Internet Explorer (IE)

  • The current version is IE 11. This version of IE works with all current versions of Windows. There have been a variety of issues noted when using IE 10, so it is suggested to upgrade to IE 11 (see links at the end of this document).
  • Full functionality for the Sharepoint technologies requires using the 32-bit version of IE. This may not be the default version, depending on your OS and other factors of your installation.IE requires the use of certain Active-X controls to work fully with Sharepoint technologies. By default Active-X is turned off at installation, so must be enabled in IE settings. Also, when installing IE for the first time (rather than upgrading to a new version), security settings may block notification of these required additions. Security settings must be adjusted to allow these notifications. As per previous paragraph, the 64-bit version of IE cannot run Active-X controls.
  • IE requires your ShareVision site be included in the list of sites to be opened using Compatibility View.
  • You may also need to add your ShareVision site to the Trusted Site list in IE Security settings.
  • Upgrading to new versions of IE will reset modified settings back to the defaults.

Office 2007/2010

  • It is recommended by Microsoft that Office 32-bit be installed in almost all circumstances (see links at the end of this document).
  • When installing Microsoft Office, ensure that SharePoint components are included with the install, these are required for advanced functionality. If not included during the original installation, they can be added from Programs & Features in Control Panel.
  • Datasheet mode requires Microsoft Access. If Access is not installed as part of your Office suite a workaround is to download the Access Database Engine. It is reported that the Access Database Engine 2007 will also work for both Office 2007/2010 (see links at the end of this document).

Office 2013

  • It is recommended by Microsoft that Office 32-bit be installed in almost all circumstances (see links at the end of this document).
  • Microsoft Office 2013 64-bit does not include SharePoint connectivity components within the installation package as in previous versions. There have been issues reported between this version of Office and SharePoint. As noted above, it is generally not recommended to install the 64-bit version of Office. If you choose to install Office 64-bit then additional components need to be downloaded and installed separately (see links at the end of this document).

Office 2016

  •  There are some features from previous versions that are not compatible with Office 2016. For details check the Microsoft Office site if you are upgrading an earlier version of Office.
  • The ability to selectively install individual applications is not available in this version of Office.

Regarding Windows 8/8.1

  •  Windows 8 Tile (or ‘Metro’) mode has an icon for Internet Explorer. By default this will open a streamlined, reduced functionality version of the browser that will cause some functionality issues in ShareVision. You will need to set the tile to open the full Desktop version of Internet Explorer (see links at the end of this document).

Regarding Windows 10

  •  Although it is included in Windows 10, IE is not displayed on the desktop or in menus, and must be found in the system folders in order to make a short cut to the program. It is recommended to use the 32-bit version.
  • Edge is the default browser in Windows 10. As noted above it has similar functionality to Chrome. Note that Edge is part of Windows 10 and cannot be uninstalled.
